FLAG STOPS AND SAFETY

Island Transit provides service in rural Island County and allows riders to request "flag stops" instead of, or addition to, fixed stops. A flag stop is when a rider boards the bus at a location that is not an established bus stop with a posted bus stop sign.  If you are unable to make it to a regular bus stop, flagging the bus down is an option in certain areas. Flag stops are only recommended in very rural areas as a supplement to fixed stops. The driver has discretion to stop the bus to pick up or drop off passengers at any location requested by a rider, as long as it is safe.

Keep in mind, there are potential safety concerns about stopping at certain spots in Island County. Touch base with a customer service representative if  you are unsure that the bus will be able to completely pull out of the traffic lane and safely perform a flag stop. Together you can identify a safe location, where the bus can stop without creating a hazard, and where the driver can see you in plenty of time to stop.

As the bus approaches, raise and lower your arm over your head several times to catch the driver’s attention. Be sure to stay back from the edge of the road to allow the bus enough room to pull off. During dark or foggy weather we suggest you have a flashlight that you can wave for the driver to see you.

A list of stops that Island Transit will not service due to safety reasons is below. A copy can also be printed out. This list rarely changes, but you want to confirm by checking back here or sending an email to info@islandtransit.org.
