ISLAND TRANSIT OVERVIEW and BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Agency Snapshot
The Island County Public Transportation Benefit Area (PTBA), officially known as Island Transit, is a transit agency established under RCW 36.57A. The agency is a municipal corporation and operates independently from Island County.
Island Transit was launched on December 1, 1987, and service has grown from a small fixed‑route network that carried 161 riders on its first day to providing Island County with fixed‑route, paratransit, on‑demand, and rideshare (vanpool) services. Our customers use Island Transit to commute to work and school, do their shopping, access medical and social services, travel to recreational opportunities, travel to the Washington State Ferries’ Clinton-Mukilteo and Coupeville-Port Townsend terminals, and to connect with our neighboring public transit systems.
Governance
Island Transit is overseen by a seven‑member Board of Directors that provides financial oversight and policy direction. The Board consists of six appointed elected officials and one non‑voting labor representative:
- Three Island County Commissioners
- One elected official from the City of Oak Harbor
- One elected official from the Town of Coupeville
- One elected official from the City of Langley
- One labor representative from Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1576
