In our rural environment, on a dark day, dark clothing can be spotted only 50 feet away. Reflective clothing or lights can be seen from 500 feet away. Help our bus drivers (and other motorists) see you in time for a safe stop. Ask for a free reflective vest or flashlight when you ride Island Transit buses.

WASHINGTON STATS

32% of pedestrian traffic deaths involved a distracted driver

43% of pedestrian traffic deaths involved an impaired pedestrian

70% of bicyclists killed in traffic involve a crash where the posted speed was 30 mph or higher

Tips for Pedestrian and Cycling Safety

  • Be Bright-Wear bright reflective clothing and carry a light. In addition, bikes should have a white light on the front and a red light on the back of the bike.
  • Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections, under streetlights whenever possible.
  • Use sidewalks or a path instead of the road whenever possible. Walk on the shoulder facing traffic if a sidewalk or path are not available.
  • Unplug - Avoid using electronic devises which can be distracting to both pedestrians and drivers.
  • Avoid walking or driving if you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol which can impair judgment and slow reaction time.
